When considering breast augmentation , another factor must be given some thought and discussed with your plastic surgeon. This is where your implant incisions will bemade. Here are the four types of incisions that could be used during breast surgery.

Inframammary Incision
This incision allows the scar to remain hidden in the fold at the bottom of the breast. No breast tissue is cut during this procedure and the results will not interfere with breast feeding. This incision is the most versatile because your surgeon has a lot of control over how the implant is placed. If any future surgery is required, this method of implant placement allows for easier access.

The main disadvantage of location is that your incision scar remains red for approximately 12-18 months. Also, because of the location, your bra may irritate the incision as it heals.

Peri-Areolar Incision
This incision is made around the outer edge of the areola, which circles the nipple. This location makes it easier for your surgeon to be sure your areolas and nipples are placed evenly. In some cases the nipple may become inverted, but your surgeon can correct this with ease through the peri-areolar incision. Once healed, the scar blends well with the areola due to the change in skin color.

Disadvantages:
• There is a 2-5% chance of losing sensation in the nipples
• 20% of patients experience difficulty in breast feeding

Axillary Incision
This incision is placed in the patient’s armpit to prevent the scar from being easily seen.

One disadvantage of this type of incision is the high risk of uneven implant placement, about 10-15%. Another disadvantage is that any future surgery would require additional incisions.

Umbilicus Incision
This incision made in the belly button area to avoid any breast scarring post-surgery. It is used only when working with saline implants because they are folded before insertion. After they’re in place they are filled.

Disadvantages
• A higher risk of uneven placement of the implants
• Abdominal irregularities may result
• The sub-glandular placement would be the only safe one
• Any future surgeries would require more incisions
• The surgeon has less control over accuracy of placement

Your Decisions
As you can tell, there are a few options available to you for incision location. Which choice is best depends on the type of implants you are having placed, your surgeon’s recommendations, and your personal preferences.

As with any plastic surgery procedure you are considering, be sure you choose a qualified and skilled surgeon . Plastic surgery is a personal choice that must be considered very carefully. Take the time to thoroughly discuss every aspect of the procedure you are considering with your plastic surgeon.
