Snoring is the prevalent and constant sleeping disorder worldwide. A number of people are not aware that there is another condition that is becoming popular. This sleep tormentor is known as bruxism. This condition occurs in daytime and nighttime. Nocturnal bruxism is rarely known by its sufferers. The only time they will know that they have this condition is through the people who have slept with them. Bruxism is a common source of morning discomfort. Sufferers will feel tiredness and soreness of their jaws, migraines and neck pains.
Anxiety and stress are the most popular caused of bruxism and reduction of these is the essential first step towards a bruxism cure. Dental issues will be considered as another cause of bruxism, if these two most common causes are not distinguished. Here are some methods or practices that can help improve bruxism:
Warm baths before bedtime have proven to be very effective in minimizing the occurrence of bruxism. Warm water has a soothing effect on nerves. Also, on tired and tensed muscles.
The application of heat or warm moisture on the jaw area works as well in reducing the bruxism. The procedure is simple. Just soak a clean cloth in hot water and extract any water absorbed before applying it on the jaw. This is better than heating pad since moist heat is easily absorbed.
Exercise helps in eliminating toxins in the body. It also helps in good circulation and promotes a positive well being. It relaxes the tensed muscles of the body that including the jaw muscles which is affected by bruxism. The same logic applies to body massage. It releases all forms of body stresses. Massaging the facial and jaw muscles helps in improving this condition.
Repressed or suppressed feelings cause anxiety and stress. It is best to discuss these feelings to a close friend or family member. In the absence of these people, one may seek assistance through a counsellor or psychiatrist. If you're a believer, you can talk to your minister or priest and they will be able to help you unload your heavy burdens. Listen to relaxing music or practice meditation. Remember bruxism is caused by stress.
Mouth guards are very efficient when it comes to protecting the teeth from further damage due to bruxism. You can also use an athletic mouth guard or order a kit from laboratories so you can create a mould of your bite. You can even just buy from over the counter drugstores. It is still best to consult your dentist to get the perfect fit.
Most of us are familiar that botox helps in the removal of wrinkles. This concept was applied in bruxism. Since the jaw muscles are the ones responsible for the gnashing, grinding and clenching, then botox is being injected in these muscles. In doing so, the jaw muscles are relaxed and weakened. This procedure is only effective for three months. One can have another injection to regulate bruxism but dosages should be controlled since this might result to permanent damage to the jaw muscles. The repercussion would be one's inability to chew food. Consider botox to be a last resort bruxism cure and only with the advice of your doctor.
