A few months ago, after my mother died of cancer, I decided that I wanted to find out more information about some of my relatives. I knew that my mother had come from a big family, and that she had grown up in California. I wasn't sure what kind of information I was looking for, but eventually I decided to look at the California Death Records . My mother had met my father and moved to Boston with him when she was seventeen. She didn't talk much about the family she left behind, and the circumstances of her life in California were mysterious to me. But I did know that she had a brother and sister, which meant that I had an aunt and uncle I'd never met. I figured that death records would be a good place to start. I mean, not everybody has a huge presence in the media, lots of people never appear in any newspapers or on the internet, but everybody is born and everybody dies eventually. So I figure that obituary searches are a good way to cover a vast number of people. I was absolutely right. It turned out that my mother's father had died only a few months earlier than she had. His obituary was extensive, and I loved learning about the grandfather who had been a stranger to me. The most helpful thing about obituary searches is the list of surviving relatives. That's how I found the names of several my mom's cousins, and how I found out that her sister and brother were still alive! I eventually tracked down contact information for them both, and traveled to meet them in California. After that, they came and visited my family in Boston. I am so glad that I decided to look at the California death records. That decision definitely made this process more efficient.
