Female orgasm is a tough subject to discuss. Many women have difficulty in achieving orgasms at all, which can make for feelings of sexual inadequacy for them and their partners. Sometimes women just do without orgasms. After all, many have been taught that sex is something they do for their husbands, not something they are supposed to enjoy. But even for women who enjoy intercourse, achieving orgasm at all can be difficult. These women often fake orgasms for the pleasure of their partner and to reduce tensions around sex.

For some scientists, too, female orgasm is a controversial subject, since many hold that female orgasm is merely an anatomical byproduct of male orgasm, kind of like the arguments put forward for the presence of men's nipples.

One of the main arguments for this theory is that most women's orgasms are clitoral, that is, produced as a result of stimulation of the clitoris. The clitoris is considered by these scientists to be a structural analog of the penis. And since clitoral stimulation during intercourse is not normally sufficient to achieve orgasm, scientists supporting the byproduct theory use that evidence to argue that female orgasm is an accidental effect and not related to promoting reproduction.

Does this mean that women should just accept that they are not made for orgasms?

The G-Spot

But some women are able to achieve orgasms as a result of vaginal intercourse, thanks to a structure known as the G-spot, which is itself controversial. However, at least one study seems to confirm that there is an anatomical difference between women able to achieve vaginal orgasms and those unable to achieve them. In this study, ultrasound measurements of the anatomy of a woman's urethrovaginal space indicated that women able to achieve vaginal orgasms had thicker tissue between the urethra and the vagina than women unable to achieve them.

The G-Shot

Although small, this study shows that a distinct anatomical difference can be linked to the ability to achieve vaginal orgasm. Independent of this research, some plastic surgeons have begun offering what is known as the G-Shot, or G-spot augmentation . In this procedure, human-engineered collagen is injected into the urethrovaginal space to build up the tissue here. The hope is that this injection will change women who cannot have vaginal orgasms into women who can.

According to some studies, 87 % of women who undergo g-spot augmentation experienced greater sexual arousal and gratification. However, all women are different, and it may not help all women. For example, when comedian Margaret Cho underwent a G-Shot procedure, she said she didn't feel "any sexual enhancement at all," even going so far as describing it as "a good punishment for sex offenders." Comedy aside, her experience reminds us that the enlarged region between the vagina and the urethra might be a necessary condition for vaginal orgasm, but not a sufficient one. Some women may lack the necessary nerve endings to achieve vaginal orgasm as well.
