Smoking is a dangerous addiction, not only because of the many ways it is detrimental to our health, but also because of how difficult it is to quit. Millions of people every year will try to quit, and sadly most of them will fail. Whilst conventional methods such as patches, gum and good old cold turkey may work for some, others seek to cure their addiction with alternative treatments. Here we are going to look at one of those such treatments: acupuncture.
What Is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture was first developed by the ancient Chinese thousands of years ago, with modern acupuncture still using the same age old principles today. Without delving too deeply into the ancient philosophies that govern this kind of treatment, acupuncture is the practise of inserting needles into various parts of the body for pain relief and certain therapies. It is said to work by targeting points on the body along which 'life energy' flows, which can manipulate certain organs and such.
How Does Acupuncture Work In Quit Smoking ?
Smoking, like any addiction, is hard to quit because your body has become used to getting its regular fix. Depriving it of this fix is going to cause withdrawal symptoms, as certain organs become dependant on this fix to function. Acupuncture works by reducing, and even eradicating these withdrawal symptoms.
One such organ that becomes nicotine dependant is the liver. It becomes less reliant on it's own energy source due to the regular stimulation it receives when you smoke. When you stop smoking your liver does not have enough energy to perform, and re-learning how to acquire its energy naturally from the body will take time. During this time, with your liver unable to function at 100%, you will experience various withdrawal symptoms as well as tobacco cravings.
Acupuncture works by stimulating the energy of your liver through the insertion of needles into your body, which encourages the natural 'Life Energy' to flow. By boosting your liver's energy this way, instead of reaching for a cigarette, you will not only ease the withdrawal symptoms and cravings, but learn to live without smoking.
Although treatment can vary with the individual, you should expect to have 4 - 6 treatments over 2 - 3 weeks. After this time, your acupuncturist may suggest further treatment to reduce any further cravings you may have. This is done by taping an ion pellet to one of your ears. By simply pressing this pellet when you experience a craving, it will cause your body to release endorphins. By stimulating these endorphins, a natural opiate, the cravings will be alleviated.
Although inserting needles to stimulate 'life energy' to beat your addiction might sound a bit 'new agey', it does have an 85 - 90 percent success rate in removing the cravings suffered by recovering smokers. And with four thousand years of medicinal and therapeutic use, it is a 'new agey' treatment that has stood the test of time.
