It is very upsetting for most childless couples to see other parents with babies and wonder why that dream can't come true for them. Sometimes they feel singled out, but in fact there are many, many couples at any given time who are in the same position of trying desperately to have a child. As a matter of fact, when you realize how small the chances of getting pregnant in any given month are, it's more amazing that so many couples don't have any problem. But with the modern medicine and science of today's world, there are many opportunities to overcome almost any reasons for infertility. It is no longer the curse it was in the days of yesteryear. There are many reasons for infertility, but most couples suffer from the same handful of diagnoses. And some may not be infertile at all, but don't understand the process. (Yes, you know the "how" but do you also know the "when"?) A woman is fertile at about the midpoint of her cycle, and the egg does not live very long (only about 24 hours). If the egg is not fertilized at that exact right time, it will not mature into a baby. So the sperm has to be ready and waiting when her fallopian tube sends that egg on its way. Since the sperm only lives about 72 hours, this timing can be very close indeed. In addition, many women have irregular menstrual cycles and they couldn't even say when the middle of their cycle is. A doctor may prescribe drugs to help with regularity. One simple method is to measure a woman's Basal Body Temperature (BBT) and monitor her cervical mucous. Both methods have been used to help avoid pregnancy but knowing with some precision when ovulation occurs will also assist in becoming pregnant. These kits can be easily purchased in the drug store to chart daily temperature. Temperatures must be taken at the exact same time every morning beginning with the first day of the menstrual cycle. Typically there will be a one to two degree temperature rise at ovulation. Sometimes the man is the one causing the problem, since in 20% of the cases of infertility; it is low sperm count that is the root cause. Once again, a doctor may recommend some drug or hormone treatment, or even surgery is a blockage is suspected. Fertility specialists perform a number of diagnoses on the man's sperm to find out what can be causing the problem. Sometimes procedures such as IVF (in vitro fertilization) may be of assistance. Your age and your lifestyle can also be a reason for infertility. The older the couple, the harder it will be to conceive, and unhealthy habits such as drinking, smoking, drugs and overeating and lack of exercise leading to obesity can be the cause of a couple's infertility. Ironically, two things we think of as healthy can also have a detrimental effect on fertility. Women who exercise too much deprive their bodies of vital nutrients, and don't produce an egg each month, and vegetarians also lack some important nutrients that may be essential in production of a healthy egg. This is all good advice anyway: maintain a healthy weight, quit smoking and drinking, no more drugs, eat a properly balanced diet and get the right amount of exercise. You should do that whether you are trying to conceive or not!
