Candida infections are more common in pregnant women. There are actually some time periods in women’s life when they are more susceptible to yeast infections.

  • The first one is during the puberty time – the acidity in the vagina, due to hormonal changes goes lower than it should be and girls become more susceptible to Candida infections.

  • The second one is during pregnancy, especially during the second semester of pregnancy. The mechanism is the same – hormonal changes that lead to a pH change, which lead to an increased incidence of vaginal yeast infections.

  • The third moment in life, when women are more susceptible for Candida is the menopause. And again, it is all because of hormonal changes: the sexual hormones stop to be released in the blood, so there is a lack of them in the organism. The lack of sexual hormones in the blood leads to skin changes, mucosa changes (both become sorer) and also to increased susceptibility for yeast infections.

Scientific studies however have shown that women are most susceptible to yeast infections during their pregnancy. Luckily the Candida infection is not dangerous to the baby: it can not cause the birth defect and don’t represent any danger to the baby. But it is extremely uncomfortable, and you already have some lack of comfort due to pregnancy itself.
On the other hand, you don’t have really a good choice of medication due to the fact that you are pregnant, and pregnant women should avoid some drugs and to follow a balanced diet.
Most specialists agree that the most efficient and less dangerous treatments for yeast infections during pregnancy are creams and suppositories, which are applied locally in your vagina. The danger of vaginal Candida is that it can be passed to your baby during labor. The duration of the treatment is normally from one to two weeks.
