For decades, seniors all over America have been enjoying the freedom that electric lift chairs offer them.  However, since medicare stopped reimbursing people for the entire cost of lift chairs, buying one has become problematic for many, especially those with low income.  If you need an electric lift chair and can't afford one, consider a used model.  Used models can cost 50% less, or more, than their brand new counterparts, making them affordable for most people.

One of the best places to look is Craigslist.  The biggest advantage of going to Craigslist is that you'll be buying local; this will save you a ton of headaches later on.  First and foremost, you'll save a lot of money on shipping; lift chairs are HEAVY, and are thus expensive to transport long distances.  Secondly, you'll be able to look at the chair before you buy.  Ideally, you'll want a lift chair that doesn't have a lot of use on it but still costs considerably less than a new chair.  However, since you're buying local you'll need to bring cash (for the most part).  This could be a problem if you were planning on paying on installments, with medicare's $300 lift mechanism reimbursement, or with a credit card.  Also to note, you'll need to arrange for transportation and delivery.  They are only here to sell it to you, not move it for you.

While browsing Craigslist or the internet, you might find several companies offering used lift chairs .  These companies buy them from auctions or from other people, refurbish them, and then resell at a markup.  The savings will depend on the quality and company you go for, but expect to pay 30-50% less when purchasing from a company.  Look for a company with reasonable shipping costs, as well as excellent reviews.  You won't want to purchase a used machine with a no refund policy that breaks a few months after receiving it.

Finally, estate sales are an uncommon but great place to find lift chairs.  When a person who owns a lift chair passes, the family will often have absolutely no use for the chair and will try to get rid of it for pennies on the dollar.  The hardest route, but one that offers the best results.

Buying used no longer has the same negative connotations that it did decades ago.  Thanks to every improving quality control standards, devices like lift chairs are lasting longer and longer, thus making the used market feasible.  If you need a lift chair but can't afford new, buying used might be the answer you were looking for.
