Can't sleep night after night? What a miserable feeling. Do you wake up, and you hope that the time is somewhere close to the time you wanted to get up, but are dejected when you see you have only slept for three hours? It should not be this way!

If you can't sleep on a regular basis, chances are you have insomnia. But you certainly are not alone. It is a condition that strikes tens of millions of people. And it is a problem that seems to be getting worse.

For many people who can't sleep, the first thing they want to do is get some sleeping pills. I do not recommend this. Sleeping aids have a lot of drawbacks. First of all, they are known to be quite addictive. And they can have a lot of side effects as well. There have been studies were certain sleeping pills cause people to do very strange things in their sleep, including getting into their cars and driving! And sleeping pills are not a cure for those who can't sleep and have insomnia. They only offer a very short term solution, and when you decide to stop using them, your insomnia is likely to return (this is referred to as "rebound insomnia").

If you can't sleep on a regular basis, you should consider some lifestyle changes, such as sleeping at the same time each night. There are also a number of home insomnia remedies, like taking a warm bath before bed. Just make a few changes, and hopefully you will no longer be saying "I can't sleep!"
