Although there is very little prep work outside of tournaments and very little you can/need to study up on, there may be nothing more stressful than the ten minutes you have during an impromptu round. When you first see your three topics, your mind starts to race and you start to contemplate whether or not you have a chance to succeed with each given topic. Once you choose your topic, it is then when you must decide how you will use your time. You are given very little prep time so that...

Aside from being able to think of an Impromptu speech in minutes and channel Robin Williams for eloquent, uninterrupted words, as a speaker of this event you must also understand how to manage your time.  For the nitty-gritty read further.

The very first thing that your Impromptu brain must grasp is how to train yourself to almost subliminally be conscious of time.  While presenting your speech you should focus on your structure, words, and delivery.  Giving a great...

Every league has their own rules for Impromptu Speaking.  It is such a diverse and colorful category.  Despite the variation across the country, there is one unifying "rule," or philosophy, many Impromptu speakers adhere to: less prep, more talk.  In Illinois, where speakers are given 8 minutes for prep and speech, the norm is a 2/6 split.  For many with a 7 minute limit the divide is typically 2/5.  Others do a 2/4 split.  The general consensus...

Impromptu topics can derive from anything.  Topics can be names, proverbs, quotes, news items, random words, lyrics, rhetorical questions/situations, or whatever else can be conceived.  Impromptu is an endless event in terms of what speakers may be required to talk about during a round.  Thus, from an outsider or novice's point-of-view Impromptu can be slightly intimidating at best.  Dreading what to say is almost as frightening as wondering what happens when you are...

Impromptu is not an even that gives much to the competitor.  A topic and a note card.  That is all Impromptu gives.  You supply the wits to best use the time being taken.  It is remarkable to witness a speaker create a speech in a snap with so little supplied by the event.  That's the wonder of the Impromptu Speaker.  They are cunning; using all they have and exploiting what is given.  Yet, with so little bestowed upon the speaker from the event...

Impromptu speaking is one of the hardest events for avoiding speaking blunders.  There is the constant pressure of time pressing upon you.  You must deliver a speech while thinking it up.  Plus, you have to worry about receiving a topic that either means nothing to you or is utterly asinine.  Impromptu speakers are like Atlas in regards to the stress they carry during a round.  Yet, delivering grammatically correct great speeches is required.  So, what are...

There are people who enter an Impromptu round and know exactly what to say. They have planned speeches and phrases waiting in their mind to be used. Doesn't this go against the very meaning of "impromptu?" Maybe I am wrong. Perhaps an Impromptu speaker should enter a round with speeches to pull from so they are prepared for any standard topic they might encounter.

Nah! Impromptu is supposed to be unrehearsed and spontaneous (to an extent—you do write an outline)....

What you are about to be told can possibly be the greatest Impromptu advice you will ever read.  Ever.  Well, maybe not ever.  That sets the bar rather high.  BUT, this can be the one thing that is guaranteed to improve your game.  Anticipation slowly gnawing at you?  Get ready.  Get set...

Novel advice huh?  While thisisa common sense type of approach to improvement, it is absolutely, 100% true. ...

After approximately thirty minutes of staring blank-faced at a white computer screen, watching the cursor's pulsating blink, an idea hasfinallyentered my mind.  I have noticed an influx of Impromptu articles, and I have decided I could do my part for the good of Forensics by writing a piece about this quick-paced event (wow, that sounded pompous; honestly, I'm not).  This might not be the most original conclusion ever, but as the only event I can think about currently...
