Once a patient submits himself for medical examination regarding ringing, whizzing, buzzing or hissing sounds emanating from his ear, the patient will be required to undergo a series of tests.

This is not surprisingly so since the causes of tinnitus are varied. The medical practitioners have to determine by evaluating all possible signs of disorders.

Tinnitus is basically a symptom of a more serious ailment; hence, pinpointing the cause would be the same as establishing a much larger health problem.

However, the first step that the doctor will do is consider the most common causes before requiring the patient to undergo such series of tests. Listed below are the most common causes of tinnitus:

1. Over-Accumulation of Earwax

The presence of earwax in the ears is for the purpose of trapping dirt that my find its way going to the inner ear. Hence, proper hygiene requires that earwax be removed and the frequency will depend on the cerumen or earwax produced by the person's system.

Others clean out their ears at least once a week while those who tend to have an abundance of cerumen, clean out their ears at least twice weekly. It is important that earwax be removed before the wax and the accumulation of dirt harden and block the ear canal, since this is one of the most common causes of tinnitus.

2. Old Age

If a patient is about 60 years old or thereabouts, the patient may be on the verge of hearing loss as part of the natural process of aging. The elderly person will experience tinnitus as the early signs of hearing impairment, brought about by the natural wear and tear of the body's auditory system.

3. High Blood Pressure or Hypertension

Tinnitus is one of the symptoms of high blood pressure as proper blood circulation will be prevented in some areas. Blood pressure on the other hand may be due to other possible disorders that usually takes place in the kidney, liver or even the heart.

4. Stress, Anxiety Attacks and Depression

A tinnitus sufferer should also be aware that his attending physician will need all the information he can get in order to explore all causes of tinnitus.

If a patient is suffering from some form of stress, depression or trauma, it would be best if he volunteered the information right away. This is to avoid other tests he may be required to undergo if other common causes are not plausible.

5. Improper Intakes of Medications

This is one among several common causes of tinnitus which the patient should be aware of. The doctor will learn about this only if the patient immediately volunteers the information thus cutting short all other test procedures required.

These are the common causes of tinnitus which your doctor can follow-up on. Their evaluation can lead the doctor to the right remedy or medication you will need to stop your tinnitus disorder.
