A Bra is not just the most common piece of lingerie but also a piece of cloth that provides support to the most appealing part of the female body and accentuates the appearance. Since Bra falls under Everyday lingerie, it becomes almost imperative to understand the size, shape, elasticity, width and fabric of this particular piece of garment before selecting and eventually buying it.

In order to understand the right fit of a bra, it is important to understand the most common types of bras and their functionalities. There are 4 basic types of bras:

Push up bra: This is meant for those who are not very well endowed. This type of bra adds the necessary volume to the cleavage by an additional layer of padding under the cups.

Underwired bra: This type of bra provides an additional support to women with big busts and prevents a bounce while performing activities like walking and running.

Shelf bra: This bra type is ideal for low-cut party wear since it covers only the lower portion of the cup and exposes the nipples.

Minimiser bra: This bra tones down the breasts and makes them look smaller than their actual size. It is a decent proposition for women who are top heavy.

After having understood the different types of bras, understanding their fit for every individual is also equally important.

How to measure the right size of the bra:

There are two major measurements that matter the most while buying the bra of your size:

Band size also known as the chest size and Cup size. The band size, which is the measurement directly beneath the breast, gives an idea of the right fit to every woman. This band size should be rounded off to the nearest even number as every manufacturer has different fit. It ranges from 32,34, 36 etc. The cup size is the measure of the fullest portion of the breast. The cups hold the breast firmly in place.

Bra size is the difference between the measure of the fullest part of the bust and the band size. This is denoted by inches from 1 to 4, which range from A cup to D cup. A person should always look for bras ranging from her bra size up to 2 sizes larger.

It is very important to select bras that hold the entire breast tissue together. Bulging skin in front, on the sides and below denote the wrong size of the bra and depict a very sorry picture of the person. Also, under wires should be placed flat on the skin and should not pinch any part of the skin.

Bras can be fitted to your body shape with the help of: Snaps and Straps. These are more of adjusting elements than bra accessories.

Bra straps can be moved up or down depending on the resting position of the cup on the breast tissue. The closure of the bra in terms of hooks or Velcro can be adjusted in accordance with the straps and the length of the strap can be extended or shortened.

One thing of importance is that the length of the upper torso changes according to the height. Hence short women need shortened bra straps while taller women need extended bra straps. Also enough space as much as one finger should be provided between bra straps and the skin to avoid the straps from cutting into the skin.

Taking all these factors into account the right bra should be selected and bought in order to avoid discomfiture and awkward situations.
