The return of silicone implants offers breast augmentation candidates a wider array of options to choose from. This increase in choice makes it necessary for women to do their homework before deciding on the appropriate course for their surgery.

Ultimately, you will need to discuss your medical history and your goals for the procedure with your cosmetic surgeon so that he can help you choose the best option to suit your needs. However, it is always helpful to come to your initial consultation with a basic understanding of the different choices available.

Saline Implants

Saline implants are made up of a sterile salt water solution. The amount of saline in each implant will vary based on your desired shape, firmness and feel for your new breasts.

The main advantage of saline implants is that they are very safe. If your implant leaks, your body will absorb the fluid and expel it naturally. However, if leakage occurs, you will most likely need to undergo another procedure to fix your breast implants.

The main drawback of saline implants is that they are more likely to show ripples, creating a much less natural appearance. This is especially common among women who have breast reconstruction after a mastectomy. Women with very small breasts may also find this to be a problem.

Silicone Implants

Silicone implants are composed of a gel-like silicone substance. In 1992, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) removed them from the market over concerns that they posed a safety hazard. However, after years of intensive studies, it was determined that they do not in fact present a danger to women. In 2006, the FDA once again approved the use of silicone implants in breast enhancement surgery .

The advantage of choosing silicone implants is that they look and feel much more natural than saline implants. The disadvantage of choosing silicone is that if they leak, the gel will not be absorbed by your body the way saline will. You will need to have additional surgery to correct the problem.

Since silicone implants have only recently been reapproved for use, many cosmetic surgeons lack extensive experience working with them. If you choose to use silicone implants, make sure your doctor works with them frequently and has the experience needed to ensure that your results are first-rate.

What Should I Choose?

The truth is that both saline and silicone implants can provide you with excellent results and enhance your appearance substantially. Ultimately, the choice is up to you, and should be based on your desired goals for your surgery.
