Commitment Phobia has often been described as a fear of decision, a fear of putting all your eggs in one basket. It is a fear that you may make thewrongdecision and have to spend a great deal of time in regret of this decision. Subconsciously, I believe that those who fear commitment do so as a result of lack of self confidence. They believe that they lack the reasoning that most people have to come to conclusions about choices they know must be made. They always seem to be the type that sits on the fence on many issues of their life...they are naturally passive aggressive towards conflicts they encounter. Commitment phobia can be, interestingly enough, compared to claustrophobia, even though the events in question vary in duration. People who suffer from claustrophobia fear tight spaces. They fear that once they are in this tight space, they may not be able to get out. Once they realize they are indeed in a situation that they can't escape, they panic. They fear they may be caught in such a predicament permanently. Their worst fear is to be buried alive. The object of fear in question is a short-lived dilemma. It involves a situation that may only last for moments. Their mental-health-articles/fight-or-flight-system-the-system-that-is-the-source-of-panic-and-anxiety-1331733.html" fight or flight system is playing a broken record that haunts them constantly. People with a commitment phobia on the other hand, fear the tight spaces of their own mind. They believe once they are in a committed situation or relationship, they may not be able to get out. They fear to ever put themselves in a situation where they can't escape, for fear that they will be stuck in it permanently. They fear the lack of options that being uncommitted creates. The object of fear in question is much longer lived than fear involved with claustrophobia. It involves a situation that may last their entire lives, or for at least long enough to force a change in lifestyle. People who have a commitment phobia will sabotage any relationship that may last longer that one night. The root of the issue is really the fear they feel toward a situation. To control your fight or flight system is to control your destiny. The remedy for this is to learn to face your fears. Here is an excellent guide for facing your fears .
