Women of all breast sizes may experience a broad range of breast problems. But what are some of the most common breast issues, and what treatment options are available?

Although most breast complaints are not related to serious health conditions such as cancer, they can take a toll on women nonetheless. Whether physical or psychological, breast issues should be addressed, as treatment may be available.

Painful or Sensitive Breasts

According to the American Academy of Family Physicians , breast pain (or mastalgia) is the most common breast symptom about which women seek doctors’ counsel. Up to 70% of all women may experience breast pain at some point in their lives. Some women report having actual pain or tenderness, whereas others report having sensitive breasts.

In most cases, pain is temporary and will go away on its own. (That being said, if you are ever concerned, you should consult a physician.) For the 10% of patients who experience persistent pain, doctors may prescribe evening primrose oil or, in severe cases, a drug called danazol (Danocrine).

Breast sensitivity is also commonly considered a temporary condition. In most cases, sensitivity might indicate a hormonal change, pregnancy, or the effect of certain medications. Women who have had breast augmentation might also experience increased or decreased breast sensitivity, but this is usually resolved within a year post-surgery.

Uneven Breast Size

For many women, breasts that have developed unevenly cause psychological discomfort. In most cases, this is a natural, genetic condition that may or may not resolve itself as a woman’s breasts continue to grow and develop through puberty.

Fully grown women with asymmetrical breasts are often ideal candidates for breast augmentation, as the condition is unlikely to change. (However, pregnancy or menopause may affect the condition.) Through surgery, one or both breasts can be altered to ensure consistency in size, shape, and feel.

Sagging or Drooping Breasts

As women age, gain weight, lose weight, and have children, their breasts undergo countless physical changes. Once a woman’s breasts begin to sag or droop, however, few treatment options are available, and women may find that their breasts do not lift even through exercise and good overall care. Breast augmentation and breast lifts may help these women recover the desired shape and size for their breasts.

Breasts Altered in Surgery

Often, mastectomies and other breast trauma leave women with partial or removed breasts. In these cases, it is important to note that breast enhancement surgeries serve a reconstructive purpose as well as a cosmetic one.
