Hair is made from many components, some of which include keratin and melanin. Hair production is a function of many factors, some of them being the digestive system, hormonal system, immune system, nervous system and respiratory system. We are going to look at how each and every one of these systems affect the integrity of hair and cause hair thinning.

The first one is the digestive system. The digestive system is responsible for the absorption of all the essential nutrients and minerals that are required in the production of hair. If certain b-vitamins are deficient hair structure will be affected and things like thinning of hair will occur. If the digestive system is faulty even if the essential nutrients are all taken in they may all go to waste. So, this means for good hair growth the digestive system has to be in good condition.

The next system that affects hair production and may cause hair thinning is the hormonal system. Hormones such as the androgens have effects on hair follicles that cause hair follicles to regress and enter into the resting phase and stop growing which causes thinning of hair. Other hormones such as testosterone may cause hairs to fall and cause bald patches.

The immune system plays an important role in the maintenance of hair structure. The immune system makes sure that hair is free from fungal attacks which can affect the function of hair follicles causing hair loss. The immune system also prevents the incidence of diseases that can produce toxic substances in the blood that will result in thinning of hair.

The respiratory system may seem not to play a role in the production of hair yet it plays a very important one. Any problems in the respiratory system hair production can halt. This is so for hairs are produced by hair follicles which are cells. Cells respire. Respiration a process by which a cell breaks down chemical substances in the presence of oxygen to form energy that will be used to maintain the cells normal functions. In the case of hair follicles, they need oxygen to respire, so they can make enough energy to construct the hair strands. When oxygen is in short supply, some of the hair follicles die off, thus leaving gaps on the scalp. These gaps result in what is called thinning. Any hair follicles that remain behind will reduce in size, so they can minimize energy use, but are compromising on hair growth.

The nervous system is also associated with hair maintenance. The nervous system is the one that is responsible for the overall control of all the systems of the body. There are also other mental disorders that result in the loss of hair or hair thinning. This is so for the brain affects the level of all hormones and substances that are in the body. If the brain is somehow affected as a result of a disease or disorder, such hormonal balances will be affected which may affect hair follicles and cause baldness or the thinning of hair.
