Lots of people have questions about Botox Cosmetic, and often times they share similar concerns. Here are some answers to the most common questions about Botox.
What is Botox, and is it safe?
Botox is the shorthand term for botulinum toxin and is a substance that is injected under the skin to inhibit the release of acetylcholine. Acetylcholine is the chemical that causes your facial muscles to contract, thereby causing many types of wrinkles. Botox is extracted from a toxin, but no bacteria are injected into the skin. Thus, there is no risk of contracting botulism.
Can Botox get rid of all wrinkles?
Botox is only effective on certain types of wrinkles, specifically those caused by muscle contracture. These include many types of frown lines, furrowed brows, and crow’s feet. Most wrinkles caused by sun damage and the reduced skin elasticity that results from aging cannot be treated effectively with Botox. For these types of wrinkles, other injectable fillers like collagen or Restalyne are recommended.
What can I expect the treatments to be like?
Botox treatments are one of the most convenient, affordable, and least-invasive procedures in all of cosmetic surgery. A typical treatment takes about ten to 15 minutes, and can easily be performed over a lunch hour.
The number of treatments that you will require will depend on the size of the area being treated. You should have a good idea of what to expect after your initial consultation.
What can I expect after my treatment?
You can expect to return to normal activities immediately after leaving the cosmetic surgeon’s office. You will be advised not to rub the treated area and to avoid any activities that might put you at risk of disturbing the treated area. There is a risk of the Botox injection spreading if the treated area is disturbed.
Will my treatment have immediate results?
You should see positive results in a very short amount of time following the treatment. Expect a few days to pass before the final result is apparent.
How long do Botox treatments last, and how often will I need to repeat the procedure?
Botox injections are not permanent, and you will need periodic treatments in order to maintain your new look. A typical injection can last up to six months. It is generally not advisable to receive additional treatments until at least three months have passed since your initial, or last, treatment.
