While many times discussions focused on compliance seem to paint a sometimes bleak outlook for many CPAP users, there are some new developments in the industry which have the potential to help many CPAP users achieve a dramatically higher compliance rate. In addition to a higher compliance rate, which is sometimes vague, the health and success that continued CPAP therapy affords the user is probably the biggest reason to stick with it.

RemZzzs CPAP mask liners
One of the most exciting developments in the field of CPAP is a new product that acts as a soft barrier between the mask skirt and the skin. The product is called RemZzzs CPAP mask liners, and it works by helping to absorb the build-up of oil, dirt and moisture on the mask skirt. This dramatically reduces or eliminates both the "blow out" leaks mentioned above, in addition to preventing skin irritation and allergic reactions by removing the skin from the mask skirt material altogether. This has proved to be a winning combination for thousands of people as many have found that even some of the worst cases of dermatitis have cleared up within a short period. Many CPAP users also find that their partners are allowed to sleep without startling interruption from "blow out" type leaks. Additionally, there are those that find that leaking into the eyes as mentioned above is either reduced or eliminated which helps to prevent eye dryness and swelling.

Philip s Respironics Sleep Therapy System
Philips Respironics has recently unveiled a new CPAP therapy system. According to the press release, the new system has the following benefits:
"The new Philips Respironics Sleep Therapy System combines 25 years of experience with state-of-the-art technology and new-to-market features that optimize comfort, care, and efficacy of therapy in patients. Philips Respironics Sleep Therapy System has the ability to recognize and report when a patient may be experiencing symptoms beyond OSA. A sophisticated three-layer algorithm distinguishes between obstructed and clear airway apneas and periodic breathing, such as Cheyne-Stokes Respiration. Medical professionals now have easy access to sleep assessment parameters typically found on diagnostic equipment."

Hybrid CPAP Masks
Another recent innovation in the CPAP field is the introduction of the hybrid, or "universal" mask. A hybrid CPAP mask is generally comprised of a mask skirt that covers the mouth with a nasal "pillow" interface directly above the mouth portion. A nasal "pillow" style mask is one which employs two small prongs which fit directly into the nose and deliver the needed positive pressure. The hybrid mask is ideal for those that do not tolerate a full face mask and have issues with skin breakdown on the bridge of the nose. The hybrid, or universal mask was developed to eliminate the pressure on the forehead and nose bridge that occurs with typical CPAP solutions.
