Needing to stay within a budget is a challenge that you will face when planning your wedding. You will find that cutting the guest list will have a major impact on helping you cut costs and stay within your budget.

General guidelines for the guest list include dividing the list by thirds for the couple, bride’s family, and groom’s family or allocating half of the guest list to the bride and the other half to the groom. After you have determined the total number of guests you can invite, start compiling the list of all the people that you would like to invite.

If you find that you are exceeding your limits and will need to cut people from the list, here are some guidelines to use when deciding who to cut.

The main thing to remember when cutting guests from your list is to try to be as consistent as possible to avoid offending anyone or hurting anyone’s feelings.

1. Cutting children from the guest list is one of the quickest and easiest ways to shorten your list. Include the wording “Adult Reception” on the invitation and leave the names of the children off the wedding invitation to inform your guests that their children are not invited.

Be very consistent if you are cutting children from your list so that no one will feel offended if they see someone else’s child at your wedding. The best way to handle this is to make those special children in your life a part of the wedding party.

2. Leave off coworkers from the guest list. The number of coworkers you have between you and your fiance can really add up. While you may really like your coworkers you may only interact with them in the workplace.

3. Leave off the “And Guest” from the invitation of your single friends and family. Most people will understand that you are trying to stay within your budget and will not be offended at all.

4. If you have a large extended family of distant relative that you do not have contact with you can consider cutting them from your guest list.

5. Do not invite friends that you have not seen in the last several years. Your wedding is not the best time to catch up with these long lost friends. Even if it would be nice to see them again, contact them for a get together after the wedding instead.

6. You can also consider sending your invitations early enough to get responses from people who will not be able to attend. This way you can invite some of the people that were originally cut from the list.
