If you have insomnia, many of so called sleep "experts" will tell you you should never take a nap during the day. They say that a daytime nap will make it so that those with insomnia will not be able to get good sleep.

Do not believe everything you hear!

Taking a nap can be a great way to deal with insomnia. In fact, some say taking a nap each day is in our genes. A British professor says human beings were designed to sleep twice each day. And, a study in Greece looked at the lives of thousands of men and women over a six year period. Those who took a 30 minute nap at least three times a week had a 37% lower risk of having a death related to heart disease.

If you have insomnia, how long (or short) of a nap should you take? You should not go more than a half hour. Some say if you sleep for about six minutes, you will wake up completely refreshed. That might be a bit too short for some people, so I would say a 20 minute power nap would be ideal. If you sleep for hours, there is as good chance that you are going to have problems staying asleep at night.

If you are taking naps and having insomnia, there could be a number of other factors that are causing you to lose sleep. You should look at your lifestyle to see if there is something there that might trigger insomnia. But don't automatically discount naps.

Taking naps can help you deal with insomnia. For more tips on dealing with insomnia, check out the book Stop Insomnia by clicking here
