Allergic Otitis: Allergic otitis is an allergic condition (triggered by an allergen). It is an inflammation or infection of the ear. An allergen can be anything found in the environment. Allergens are often substances that are not harmful except for the individual's allergic nature. When there is an allergy present allergens can result in severe allergic reactions and conditions.

The ear is typically divided into three parts for reference: inner, middle and outer. Ear infections are most often found in the middle ear. Ear infections can  be bacterial. When ear infections are bacterial they are treated with antibiotics. Allergic otitis is an allergic ear infection. Because it isn't a bacterial ear infection it may not respond to treatment with antibiotics.

Treatment: Individuals who have allergic reactions to specific allergens are strongly urged to avoid contact with those allergens. Individuals who are presenting with allergic otitis are no different. Their first line of defense should be avoidance of the allergen causing the condition. Once allergic otitis presents pain medication may be required.

Summary: The most effective treatment for allergic otitis (or any allergic condition) is to avoid the allergen causing the condition. Recovery times vary depending upon the case at hand. Topical or oral pain medication can provide pain relief as necessary.

Infections in the ear cause the patient pain. At times the pain can be excruciating. Individuals who find themselves experiencing allergic otitis frequently should visit an allergist to identify the allergen avoid future recurrences of the condition.

Allergists can also aid allergy sufferers by sharing their extensive knowledge and expertise as pertaining to allergy medications. They could discuss pain medication options with their patients. Some appropriate pain medications are available in tablet form as well as topical.

Another viable options for some cases is over the counter medication. For those who do not feel this is adequate they can consult their physician to obtain more specific or more powerful pain meds.

For some cases topical pain medications are advantageous. Topical pain medication (in the form of ear drops) are easy to administer regardless of age, etc. and they often take effect immediately.
