Dental Veneers refer to thin, custom-made shell of material that resembles a tooth. Dental Veneers are also known as Dental Porcelain laminates or Porcelain Veneers. Dental Veneers are placed over the real teeth to enhance your appearance, to make the teeth appear whiter and to protect a damaged tooth. Veneers help in easily concealing unattractive, cracked, stained or damaged teeth.

You could go in for either of the two options: Porcelain Veneers or Composite Resin Veneers on the basis of your budget and the recommendation of your cosmetic dentist. While Composite Resins usually last for five to seven years, Porcelain Veneers are highly expensive and can last between ten to fifteen years.

Although Dental Veneers offer numerous advantages, they have certain flipsides too.

  • Veneers are mainly used to cover teeth that are damaged, dulled or uneven and cannot be fixed. However, they may be unsuitable in certain circumstances, as the preparation for bonding the veneer to your natural teeth tends to destroy it. Therefore, Veneers are not recommended for persons who want to go in for tooth bleaching, orthodontic alignment treatments, or have existing cracks in their teeth covered with special resin.
  • Another major difficulty in the use of Veneers is that if the existing natural teeth have undergone extensive damage, it obstructs good preparation.

Before opting for a Dental Veneer, do take the following points into consideration:

  • Do make sure that your teeth do not respond to a tooth-whitening system. Otherwise, your teeth could suffer permanent discolouration or damage owing to excess fluoride, tetracycline or such other drugs.
  • Choose the appropriate material for the Veneer. If you wish to opt for teeth whitening, Porcelain Veneers will generally be the preferred choice. This material resembles a real tooth in its appearance and best suitable for stain resistance.
  • Veneers could be used to conceal discoloration of a whole set of teeth or an individual tooth which is permanently discolored.
  • Follow the recommendation of your dentist and avoid stain-causing foods and beverages. Regularly practice the usual oral hygiene practices such as brushing and flossing.
