A destination wedding can take place anywhere in the world, be it across the globe in Thailand, Russia, Cayman Islands, or it could be in the US, a couple hours away. People have many reasons for choosing an exotic destination to celebrate their nuptials. Reasons include wanting a warm wedding in the middle of winter, or recreating a magic moment in the development of the relationship. Others just want to see a new part of the world. No matter where you go, consider costs to both you and your guests, to ensure your loved ones will be able to attend.
If you only want close family and friends to attend, then a distant location may be a possibility, but for those who want a big wedding, finding an affordable location will ensure many more people attend the wedding. There are a few things to remember with destination weddings: Can people take time off work, or will they only be there for the weekend? What are the costs of airfare and hotel? How long will it take to travel to your destination?
For those wanting to get away without huge expenses, then somewhere like Arizona might be a great option. Arizona is warm year-round. Blue skies and sunshine greets people from northern states and countries like Canada. During the winter, it's an especially attractive venue.
The warmer the destination, the better the odds of having an outdoor element to the wedding. Heat lamps help warm things up when the night falls, making cocktail hours and ceremonies comfortable any time of year and any time of day.
Nighttime weddings that are held outdoors can be enhanced by gas lights, fireplaces and candles. Be sure the wedding location venue has sufficient lighting so guests aren't trying to enjoy meals in the dark. Think white lights, or Chinese lanterns. Having a theme wedding might dictate the kind of lighting you prefer, or you can have the wedding during the day and cocktail hour outside as the sun sets.
Another benefit of having a destination wedding in the US, and away from the coasts, is you end up saving money. For example, in Arizona the wedding venues, vendors, flowers and food will all be cheaper than trying to do a wedding in Los Angeles or New York.
Be considerate to guests coming and do some scouting on hotel and airfare. Often times package deals end up being much more affordable than booking each flight and room separately. Travel agents may be able to help you get an even better deal than anything you can find on your own.
