We live in a hyper competitive world. This means that the person who is able to accomplish the most, produce quality work, and manage their time the best, is the one who gets noticed the most. If you feel that you struggle with time management, then you have no other choice but to shape up, otherwise, you are going to be left in the dust of one of your co-workers, fellow students, or competitors.
The first rule of time management strategy is fairly basic and overwhelmingly obvious: DON'T WASTE TIME! However, it is this rule that gets broken most often. Why? Because tasks that make you feel productive are actually eating away at your day. For instance, how many times do you check email? How often do you sit on the phone talking to a friend or even a business associate that you are friendly with? You may feel like this is work, but it's not if we decide to be honest with ourselves.
Another time management tip is to hone a strategy to do work or get something done even when you have some downtime. For instance, you are sitting in a dentist's office waiting for an appointment. Instead of reading the magazines from 1987, carry a notebook with you and formulate a list or work on ideas for a project that you have at work. Or, if you are on your way home, start writing down that grocery list, it will save you time later and allow you to get home sooner.
Next, make sure your calendar is up-to-date. This means making sure your deadlines are listed, your appointments and necessary items are correct. This assists greatly in successful time management strategy because it keeps you on task. Plus, it holds you accountable to what you commit to.
Finally, in order to be super productive and get an edge over your competitors, use tools that allow you to work or update files anywhere. For instance, use an email provider that is internet based and doesn't have to be stored on your computer, or use a tool like Google Documents that allows for easy sharing and access from any computer, no matter where you are. This way, if you find yourself somewhere with time to kill, you can get something done, instead of watching TV or doing some other time wasting activity.
At the end of the day, we are not trying to discourage fun or relaxation. When you employ a time management strategy into your life, you will find you have more balance, have the ability to relax when you really want to relax, and you will get more done at school or work.
