We are all different people and we all have different work methods and techniques that are best for our particular lifestyle and personality; this same theory holds true for successful time management. Time management is not a one size fits all practice, you have to be able to identify a strategy that works best for you and the way that you like to work or accomplish tasks.
The first rule is to be able to understand and get your head around when you are most productive during the day. For some people, early morning is best, for others, later in the day is better. Some people even do their best work in the middle of the night. Now, while it may not be possible for you flip your 8 to 5 job from 5 to 8, try to deviate a schedule that compliments the time that you are most alert and focused. This is when you are most effective and are getting the best work that you can do, done.
Another helpful idea is to take the last half an hour of your work day or before you go to bed to regroup and recap what you did during that day. Not only will this provide a sense of accomplishment and purpose, but it will also allow you to plan for what needs to get done tomorrow. This tactic allows you to be more focused and by planning your day, you will be able to save up to two hours in time spent trying to get organized.
A key point to time management is not only to be productive, but also get the competitive edge over your colleagues and competitors. Ask yourself what time do you get up in the morning? Next, determine what type of results you are getting by waking up at that time? If you are not happy with those answers, then it is time for you to get up an hour earlier, because your competitors are. This is one of the best ways to get more done, be at the office before your competitors are, or do more before 8 a.m. than anyone else. Not only will your efforts be noticed, but you will also reap the rewards.
Finally, and this is the most important, make the decision on how you want to change. Determine what your goals are and what is most important to you. What do you define as success in time management and what will it look like when it is a part of your life? You will find that when you lay out a plan and not only implement it, but also allow it to be a component of your life that you live by, time management will become something that you do not even have to think about, it will be something you just do.
