The dream of having children is one of the most treasured hopes of most women. Unfortunately for many women this dream doesn't come into fruition because of lack of partner, partners in ability or sexual preference. donor insemination has made it possible for all of these women to become mothers.

Donor insemination or artificial insemination is the process of impregnating a woman by means other than sexual intercourse. This is most commonly used for couples where the men produce too little or no sperm, in which case a donor's sperm is used. This process also allows women without male counterparts either single or lesbian to have children of their own.

There are 3 (three) techniques for donor insemination: intrauterine insemination, intravaginal insemination or intercervical insemination and intratubal insemination. Intracervical being the most like how things in nature work with the thawed sperm injected high into the cervix with a needle-less syringe in the same manner as it would during intercourse.

Intratubal insemination can be combined with intrauterine insemination (IUI), the injection is done straight into the fallopian tube however this method may or may not be any more beneficial than the IUI alone. Speak to your doctor about this method and others to best determine which is right for you.

Intrauterine is done with ‘washed' sperm; all of the extra fluids are not present and are injected into the women's uterus. The ‘washing' is to prevent any issues such as uterine cramping similar to menstrual cycles as the uterus tries to expel the semen. It is recommended that the woman relaxes on the table for about 15 minutes to ensure this doesn't happen.

The process is still just as tricky as traditional methods because timing is everything. There is typically a 12 hour window of optimum fertilization, missing this window doesn't mean it won't happen but it is highly less likely that it will.

There is more to donor insemination such as perhaps storing your own eggs or you husbands for future use, and some companies like California Cryobank offer post-conception services such as sibling registry, donor updates and donor contact requests. They understand that getting pregnant is only part of the process.
