Eat and Drink in the Bible

The Bible says: But the Rabshakeh said to them "Has my master sent me to speak these words to your master and to you, and not to the men sitting on the wall, who are doomed with you to eat their own dung and to drink their own urine?"

This statement is found in 2 Kings 18:27 and it is repeated in Isaiah 36:12 as follows:

2 Kings 18:27 (English Standard Version)

27But the Rabshakeh said to them "Has my master sent me to speak these words to your master and to you, and not to the men sitting on the wall, who are doomed with you to eat their own dung and to drink their own urine?"

Isaiah 36:12 (English Standard Version)

English Standard Version

12But the Rabshakeh said "Has my master sent me to speak these words to your master and to you, and not to the men sitting on the wall, who are doomed with you to eat their own dung and drink their own urine?"

In this statement, there is an announcement to eat their own dung and to drink their own urine.

How do seven Biblical commentaries say about the verse 2 Kings 18:27?

It seems likely that the verse 2 Kings 18:27 cause some embarrassments to the Biblical scholars.

Four Biblical commentaries give No comment on 2 Kings 18:27; they are:

  1. Geneva Study Bible
  2. John Gill's Exposition of the Bible
  3. Matthew Henry Commentary on the Whole Bible (Concise)
  4. Scofield Reference Notes (1917 Edition).

However, three Biblical commentaries give some comments on 2 Kings 18:27; they are:

(1) Matthew Henry Commentary on the Whole Bible (Complete):

If they held out, they must expect no other than to eat their own dung, by reason of the want of provisions, which would be entirely cut off from them by the besiegers; but if they would capitulate, seek his favor with a present and cast themselves upon his mercy, he would give them very good treatment,

(2) Commentary Critical and Explanatory on the Whole Bible:

This was designed to show the dreadful extremities to which, in the threatened siege, the people of Jerusalem would be reduced.

(3) Wesley's Explanatory Notes:

To the men - To tell them to what extremities and miseries he will force them.

Eat and Drink in the Quran

In the Quran,

  1. The announcement to eat dung is not found therein.
  2. The announcement to drink urine is not prescribed therein.
  3. Rabshakeh is not mentioned therein.
  4. Allah recommends eating and drinking good and healthy food and drinks (verse 2:172, 7:31 etc.).

Back to my question to the smart and interested reader:

Are the Scholars truthful when they claim that the Quran quoted from the Bible?
