A large part of this reason has to do with the fact that when my father and his other brothers and sisters were growing up, there was a lot of them; therefore, she had to always make sure that there was plenty of food around. Unfortunately for her, this meant that she was constantly focusing on food and making sure that it was available. After my dad and his brothers and sisters were adults and had moved away, my grandmother continued to make food. The only difference was that she was now eating it for herself. Combined with a lifestyle that was predominantly sedentary, she soon found herself being overweight. Today, she still continues to struggle with her weight but does not want to give up the foods that she loves. She also does not want to exercise. You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink! Part of my grandmother's mentality with eating is that while she is on one of her diets, she absolutely cannot go out to eat at a restaurant. When I asked her about this, she was extremely adamant. I tried, with no success, to explain to her that she didn't have to restrict herself in that way. She could still go out to eat at restaurants. The only thing is that she would just have to order something healthy. Well, she didn't want to go out to eat at a restaurant if she couldn't order exactly what she wanted. Ah, so this was the root cause of her problem. Too often, we restrict ourselves in ways that we shouldn't when it comes to food, and the end result is tragic because what usually happens is we wind up overeating or binge eating. Later on, we feel bad about binge eating, but by then it is too late. In some cases, where binge eating is involved, we actually make ourselves eat even more food that is bad for us because we feel bad about eating bad to begin with! It's exhausting. If you are planning on trying to eat healthier, you have to begin by setting realistic goals and then going about it one small goal at a time. You have to build yourself up to a point where you have developed all of the skills (and willpower) to manage your eating habits. Combine this with a regular exercise regimen, and you will be well on your way to living a healthier lifestyle. Fill your home with foods that are nutritious and nutrient rich. For example, foods that are rich in soluble fiber will not only help clear your body of toxins, but they will help you feel fuller longer. Don't believe me? Give it a try. Switch out the butter for olive oil, buy some whole wheat pasta and whole wheat breads, cut down on the refined sugars and drink plenty of skim milk. You will start to see results in no time.
