The way our skin changes and ages in life can be tied directly to hormones and there are certain major hormones that impact our skin.  These are estrogen, progesterone, thyroid hormones(imbalance can lead to dry skin), melanin, cortisol and testosterone(maintains skin elasticity).  The power hormones have over our cells is amazing and that power is especially visible in the skin.

Our hormones affect us beginning as teenagers with the arrival of menstruation and acne.  But as we hit our 30's and 40's something called perimenopause hits us and our feminine hormones start to dwindle.  The effects of menopause are beginning to wreak havoc on our skin.  As the feminine hormones dwindle the masculine ones may increase and as a result, our skin secretes thicker sebum clogging pores and producing acne.  Acne?  During menopause?  Yes, unfortunately it is seen all too often in women as one of the effects of menopause and can affect the body as well as the face.

All the time and effort we put in to keeping ourselves in shape may be one of the culprits inciting the acne.  Heat, sweat and tight clothing are just what is needed for acne to flourish.  It is recommended that we cleanse immediately after working out with a medicated body wash and then treat with a salicylic acid treatment to help keep skin on your body clear.  Keep your facial acne under control with acne cleansers and treatments geared towards adults.

Also, women tend to discontinue birth control pills at this time in life which can also cause acne to start.  Talk to your gynecologist about starting or continuing the pill to help keep a clearer complexion and keep your sanity as well!

Menopause is actually a medical term that defines the end of a woman's menstrual cycles.  Perimenopause and menopause will cause dry skin, wrinkling, acne, thinning hair, brittle nails and overall weight gain.  Nice, huh?

Since we already addressed acne, let's switch to the skin dryness which goes hand in hand with effects of menopause.  With hormone production declining, secretions in our tear ducts and salivary and sebaceous glands slow down.  Therefore we have dryness in our eyes, mouth, vagina and skin.  Skin cell reproduction slows as well causing our skin to thin out.  Dead cells accumulate on our skin's surface making our skin look dull and drab.  Exfoliation helps increase epidermal cell turnover and ensures better penetration of moisturizers for wrinkles and acne medicines.

Lack of hormones and sun damage together result in a loss of collagen and elastin fibers.  But, using anti aging skincare products that stimulate collagen production can help combat this one of many effects of menopause on our skin.

Talk to your doctor about hormone replacement therapy(HRT) which can keep you looking awesome as well.  Three common prescriptions are used in HRT:  estrogen therapy, progesterone replacement, and combined estrogen-progesterone therapy(EPT).  HRT is also known to reduce the risk of heart attack and osteoporosis but is not recommended for women at high risk for breast cancer or breast cancer survivors.
