One BK Trans-tibial amputee with conventional prosthesis & a normal subject participated as a reference in this study with their consent to the National Institute for the Orthopaedically Handicapped, Bon-hooghly, Kolkata-90, India. Both the subjects had similarity in their age, sex, height and weight data .They were physically active & well balanced in their daily living. They are physically fit & able to complete the protocol in full. The amputee was accustomed to wearing the prosthesis and did not suffer from residual limb pain, swelling, or pressure sores. The fitting & alignment of the prosthesis was carried out by the resident PO unit of the institute. The reference subject was also examined & his fitness was certified. Subjects are asked not to ingest alcohol or caffeine for 24 hours prior to testing. A record of the subjects' diet has been kept & a similar diet has been maintained through out the study. The subjects are allowed to practice their usual gait prior to the testing until the normal gait pattern was observed. The subjects were instructed to walk at self selected slow, normal and fast speed. Through out this period, breath by breath analysis of the subjects has been carried out. A Cosmed® k4 b2 Respiratory Analyzer system (COSMED Srl – Italy) at National Institute for the Orthopaedically Handicapped, Bon-hooghly, Kolkata-90, India was used for the measurement of Oxygen Uptake (VO2), Oxygen Expenditure (O2Exp), Energy Expenditure per day (EE), Carbon Dioxide production (VCO2), Heart Rate (HR) for both subjects. At the end of the examinations we got the measurement of Oxygen Uptake (VO2), Oxygen Expenditure (O2Exp), Energy Expenditure per day (EE), Carbon Dioxide production (VCO2), Heart Rate (HR). The data were collected in both resting & walking condition of the subjects. The BK amputee consumed 16% less EEKcal/day (p < 0.0008) than the reference subject in rest & walking condition through out the study.
