It may certainly seem that old age is the number one contributing factor to hearing loss.  After all, hearing loss does seem to be more prevalent in the older portion of our population.  For years, experts believed that aging was the main cause - that we simply just wear our ears out over the years.  However, there are several factors involved in hearing loss, and age really doesn't have a lot to do with it.

Loud noise is actually the number one cause of hearing loss, and it's becoming more and more prevalent.  After all, our technology has brought about louder televisions, car engines, jet engines, and earphone speakers.  As these loud noises blast our eardrums, the tiny hair cells inside our ears begin to die.  This can happen over several years, because it is the prolonged exposure that actually causes the hearing loss, so we usually shrug and figure that old age is the culprit.  However, hearing loss is becoming a problem with younger victims, and studies show that over sixty percent of recent college graduates have greater hearing loss than their parents.  Proof positive that old age is not the culprit.

Another contributing factor is stress.  We live much faster and more furious lives now than ever, and our days are full of stress.  The hair cells in our cochlea need an adequate supply of blood and nutrients to remain healthy.  When we experience stress, our blood vessels constrict, reducing the amount of blood that can pass through them.  These hair cells are especially sensitive to the lack of blood, and will quickly die.

The last factor, and one that you probably never think about, is medication.  There are many drugs, called ototoxic, that can damage our hearing.  As we tend to take more medication at an older age, the blame is laid yet again on advance years instead of the medication.  There are over 550 different drugs that have been discovered to damage hearing, but it happens gradually over time.

It is important that you attempt to avoid any of these situations so that you might protect the hearing that you have left.  If you're still young, then there is an excellent chance that you can preserve the hearing that you have left.  If you feel that you have already passed the point of no return, then you may want to consider speaking with a doctor about hearing aids.

There is also a social stigma with hearing aids, which, of course, leads back to the idea that only the aged will need them.  Don't let the fact that it's not considered cool to wear hearing aids stop you from seeking the help that you need.  There are many different models of hearing aids, and some of them are small enough to fit into the ear canal, making them virtually invisible.  The consequences of not pursuing help can be dire, as research finds that people with uncorrected hearing loss are more likely to make less money and suffer from social isolation and depression.
