Smile can change the world as what we can often hear from the people around us. Smile can change sad situations into lighter ones and can give hope to someone who has lost it. How can you smile when you know that your gums are swollen and you have a bad breath? Of course! It is expected of you to be conscious and be uncomfortable. Swollen gums or gingival swelling are not just a simple problem that you can just ignore and let it be gone. They can be a sign of something worst is happening to your gums which needs to be treated. Oral hygiene doesn't only mean no to cavities on the teeth but also healthy gums. In case of gums, they just do not determine oral health but health of all body parts. There are so many factors that cause gums to swell. Some of these are as follow: - Malnutrition. Proper nutrition is essential in maintaining our oral health. Eating foods rich in Vitamins especially Vitamin C can help make the gums healthier. Eating sweet foods is not good for the teeth and gums.
- Bacteria attack. Bacteria production in the mouth is just normal but causes a lot of problems if they grow uncontrollably. The pace of bacteria production differs from one person to another because sugar in take differs as well. Sugar is known to be boosting the growth of bacteria inside the mouth. These bacteria try to penetrate in the areas between the teeth and the gum line making a hole to the pocket where they assemble and grow in number rapidly.
- Improper brushing of the teeth. We have always been taught how to brush our teeth the right way at least two times a day. Some people consider brushing as an ordinary activity that is not a big deal if not performed while some do their brushing harshly those results to damaging their gums. Gums have susceptible tissues that need to be given extra care or be in contact with tenderly.
- Being sensitive to mouthwash or toothpaste. Don't just pick a toothpaste or mouthwash that is recommended by someone or has good reviews. You have to be careful because gums are so sensitive that if they are compatible with your toothpaste or mouthwash, they will be damaged or may become dry which may cause bacteria to grow rapidly. Some harmful chemical contained in some toothpastes are not good for the gums. One of these is Sodium Lauryl Sulfate which is harmful to skin tissue. Alcohol found in the mouthwash can cause dehydration of the mouth as well as some other oral health troubles.
These are just some factors that can contribute to having swollen gums. Check your way of taking care of your oral hygiene if it's right. If not, I hope it's not too late for you to correct them.
