Smoking is an addictive habit, but it poses serious health concerns. If you do not take steps to quit smoking, you run the risk of succumbing to health problems, such as cancer, depression, high blood pressure, lung disease, heart disease, stroke and blindness. Other problems include bad breath, yellow fingernails, gum and tooth problems and so on. Women who smoke run the risk of miscarrying their child or giving birth to a low-weight baby.

When you decide to stop, you need help to control the urge to have a smoke again. Nicotine in the blood stream will bring on the need for a smoke, when you stop.  Here are some fast and easy ways on how to quit smoking:

  • Set aside a date to quit smoking. Remove all cigarette boxes in your home so that you do not have the chance to pick up a cigarette after you stop. Inform your family and friends that you are going to quit so that you have their support.

  • Learn Breathing Exercises. When you quit smoking, the urge to smoke gets stronger. Tension and stress can aggravate it. Practicing breathing techniques can help you control feelings for stress and tension.

  • Eat Healthier Foods. Foods that are high in fat content will increase the urge to smoke again. Replace such food items with healthier foods such as salads, greens, fiber and so on.  Daily meals must include foods that provide right quantities of protein, vitamins and minerals.

  • Use Substitutes. Most smokers have a particular time of the day, when they smoke. Learn to divert yourself to other activities during such times. Take a walk, read a magazine, play a video game during such intervals. Using substitutes such as gum, nuts or candy is a good alternative.

  • Drink Plenty of Water – Drink good amount of water to flush out nicotine and other toxins from your body. This helps to fight off cravings and keeps your body hydrated.

  • Stay away from smokers – If you are in an environment where people smoke, you are bound to feel like smoking. So, stay away from smoking areas and those who are in the habit of smoking regularly.

Last but not least; always feel confident that you can successfully quit smoking. You are bound to get successful only if you have firm commitment to the task. Write down all the reasons why you should stop smoking and tell yourself the need to stop. Be aware of the serious consequences of smoking and the reasons why you should commit to quit smoking.
