Female infertility can be defined as a condition which is characterized by some defects in the reproductive system which makes it difficult for a woman to get pregnant. Female infertility is categorized into two parts: primary infertility and secondary infertility.

In primary infertility the women fails to conceive even after having intercourse regularly for a period of one year. Secondary infertility can be defined as a condition where the woman is incapable to getting pregnant while she is trying to get pregnant for the second time. A woman, who is fertile, has reproductive organs which functions properly and produces eggs on a regular basis and the reproductive tract permits the egg and sperm to reach the fallopian tube for fertilization.

There are no specific signs of infertility that are experienced in our day to day lives. Infertility only comes into the picture when conception of a baby fails to occur even after having consistent intercourse for one year. Lack of menstrual cycles, obesity or experiencing excessive pain during intercourse or menstruation, can be warning signal for infertility.

The reasons for infertility depend on various factors such as ovarian disorder, polycystic ovarian syndrome, blockage or damage of fallopian tube, ovarian cysts, pelvic infection, early menopause, endometriosis, fibroids, and polycystic ovarian syndrome. A woman is most fertile when she is at her early twenties. Women in her mid thirties find it difficult to conceive as ovaries are not adept enough to produce eggs. Miscarriages are also common for women who get pregnant after the age of thirty five. Smoking and consumption of alcohol instigates infertility.

Tests like magnetic resonance imaging, ultrasound scan, pelvic exam, clomiphene citrate challenge test, endometrial biopsy, post-coital test, laparoscopy, hysteroscopy, and hysterosalpingography are recommended for the diagnosis of female infertility. The treatment is done on the basis of the factors which have caused the condition, age and the period of time in which infertility has surfaced. Women with ovulatory disorders are recommended the usage of fertility drugs so that ovulation can be induced.

Surgery is applicable for patients who are facing problems with the fallopian tubes. Artificial insemination is chosen by people who have large number of sperm antibodies in their cervical mucus which does not let the sperms survive in the female body. In this procedure the sperms are directly introduced into the uterus. Other options of treatment such as in vitro fertilization, intracytoplasmic sperm injection, gamete intra-fallopian transfer, and zygote intra-fallopian transfer are also available for the patients.
