There are some things in life that you should not do on your own, and quitting smoking is one of them.  If you decide on your own to stop smoking and don't tell anyone, you will fail.  Studies show that people with large support systems in place before they stop smoking have a much better chance of success.  Whether your support system is your family, the people at your work, or an organized support group, you do need help quitting smoking.

You may actually think that you are tough enough and don't need help quitting smoking, but anyone who has ever tried to stop smoking will tell you that you are wrong.  Stopping smoking is the hardest thing that you will do in your entire life and if you really want to succeed, you do need help.

There are two main aspects to getting rid of cigarettes.  The first is breaking nicotine addiction.  Nicotine is a drug, and one of the most addictive drugs around.  When you first stop smoking, your body will go into withdrawal and you will have various symptoms such as nausea, severe headaches, sweating, lethargy, and severe cravings for a cigarette.  It is always advisable to completely get rid of all your cigarettes as the first step to help quitting smoking.  You simply do not want to be tempted.

The second aspect of smoking that is even harder to quit is the cigarette ritual itself.  You live with cigarettes and they are part of your daily schedule, your routine, and you will miss them.  You will miss handling them and playing with them, taking a break at work or school with them, and just relaxing with them.  So, this may be where you need the most help quitting smoking.

Luckily, there are numerous support groups both online and in person that can help you manage getting over your addiction to nicotine and your reliance on cigarettes.  The more you learn about the habit before you quit, the better you will be able to handle quitting when the times comes.  Quitting smoking is not easy for anyone, even if you have the best and widest support system in the world.

But, the more tools you have at your disposal when the time comes, the more likely you will be to succeed.  And, if you don't succeed the first time, keep trying until you kick the habit for good.
