There was a time when first communions used to be low key, family affairs that were attended by a handful of people. But with smaller families and growing affluence, first communions are becoming gala events, just like birthday bashes and wedding parties. In fact, many parents begin preparations months in advance and start planning the event so that all their close family members and friends can make it for the ceremony.

First communions are generally held between the months of January and June, with most of the celebrations taking place between March and May. It is possible to plan these events to fall on holidays since most children who receive communications are between 7 and 8 years old. In fact, these days the church allows persons of any age to receive the sacrament.

When it comes to celebrations, you could keep your event low key, formal, informal or make it a grand event. Only take care to let your guests know what sort of event you will be holding so they are prepared. In keeping with traditions, your guests will expect a first communion favor when they return. First communion favors are generally small, inexpensive gift items that are handed out by the happy parents to guests who have come from far to bless their child and grace the occasion. Guests expect your gift to be something that they can keep with them for a long time as a memory of the beautiful occasion. You too would like your guests to preserve the gift you give them. That being the case, it is important that you invest some amount of time and planning into the purchase of your gift.

It is common for Holy Communion favors to have a religious significance. After all, the event is itself a highly religious one. Gifts may range from various designs of angels, scented Rosaries, the Holy Cross, the Blessed Mother Mary with the baby Christ in her hands, the sacred Crib and so on. However, it is wrong to think that First Communion Favors have to be religious in nature. You could also select something with a secular theme. Common gifts include pouches, candle favors, sugared candies and trinket boxes. The idea is to choose something that suits the occasion and will be to the liking of your guests.

These days, many families are opting for customized Holy Communion favors, over the non-personalized ones, even though these are costlier. There is a reason behind this. Personalized favors convey more warmth. They add a touch of the personal and thus take away the impersonality associated with gifts. To customize your favors, you mat etch the name of your child, a special message or even the name of your guests on the gift. There are no rules. You can send any message or picture of your choice.

While selecting gifts to give away during large events, it is important to plan sufficiently ahead of time. This will give you time to scour the web for the best gift ideas, choose a company and order all your gifts in time. A little planning will keep you free of last minute hassles and ensure that you enjoy the celebrations along with your guests.
