When you bring your new puppy home for the first time, training him may be the furthest thing from your mind. However, it should be a top priority, and it can be a bit overwhelming.

You might have a very busy schedule, and if so, you can take your puppy to a school that specializes in training. If you don't have the time yourself, you owe it to your new pet to employ someone who does.

The earlier you start training your puppy, the better off you will be. It is very difficult to untrained habits that have already set in, especially when it comes to housetraining.

Sometimes, small dogs or male pets can be harder to train than their counterparts. Using pads for this step in their training is highly recommended.

If this doesn't work right away, there is no need to fret. Simply place a sheet of newspaper over the pad, and put it near the door. This way your puppy will be near where he will be going outside.

If it is near the door, your dog will be able to equate going outside with his need to urinate.

It is unavoidable that a dog being housetrained for the first time will have an occasional accident. If this happens, acknowledge the mistake, and then take him outside immediately.

Some dogs will be able to learn to scratch the door or ring a bell when they want or need to go outside.

If you need to use some form of discipline, a small spray of water or swat with a rolled up paper can be effective in startling them without injuring them in any way.

Puppies naturally want to chew things, so giving him lots of toys or other objects will help him stay away from your furniture or power cords.

You must also ensure that you exercise your puppy regularly. Although leash training can be difficult, this is pivotal in being able to walk him on a regular basis.

Plan on using a short leash so that your grip is good and you have the most control. You can lessen your grip and let the leash go a bit once he gets used to being on the leash.

There are some things that are best left to the professionals, especially if your puppy ends up showing an aggressive side.

Getting proper obedience training will help you as a dog owner, and you will be able to develop a lasting bond with your new pet.

It is also important to take care of all your puppy's physical needs, including making sure he is current on his shots and grooming. The more healthcare he gets, the healthier he will be

Many dogs are prone to dental problems due to untreated teeth, so brush them regularly.

Many puppies crave attention and tend to be overly friendly, jumping up on anyone who walks through the door. You can discourage this behavior by putting your knee in his way and by backing him up.
