Here is the easiest way to become present. I use it every day. It is simple and effective, and I find that the beauty of life is shown to me, even if for a short time. Here's how to do it.
Recognizing you are not present The first thing to do is to realize you are not in the present moment. Once you catch yourself thinking about basically anything, unless you are thinking while you are working, you are not being present. Recognize this. Then move onto the second step.
Focus those eyes When you realize you aren't focusing, think about your eyes. Where are you looking? What I find is that my eyes are not focused on anything. My vision isn't honing in on one spot - it is fuzzy. So, to fix this, I do exactly ONE thing. I focus my eyes on a point in the room. But, like Steve Jobs says at Apple keynotes, there is just "one more thing"!
Focus your breathing Once you have focused your eyes on that point, begin to focus them at other things in your area. Then, do two things. The first is to notice noises around you. I did this technique yesterday. Much to my surprise, I heard police car sirens from the TV next door, a conversation in the hall, and a buzzing of the lamp overhead me - things I had been completely unaware of! After you do that, begin by taking a deep breath. Hold, and then exhale. Do these deep breaths for 10-30 seconds. If, at any time, you feel yourself spacing out, rapidly go through these steps again. It will cycle you back to focusing on your breathing.
Being in the present moment is a fantastic feeling! I find that my ego melts away, the scenery around me becomes absolutely beautiful and full of life, and I can't help but smile!
