Folding wheelchair is called as such because it can be fold up. Since it is folding it can easily be transported from one place to another. It is considered a manual wheelchair, and is available in lightweight and heavy-duty models. Since this type has several movable parts, it is heavier than other type of wheelchair such as the rigid type.

This type of wheelchair is space saving and portable. It uses the x-frame so it can be folded sideways. When it is folded, you can place it in your cars trunk or store it inside your room without occupying large space. Because of its collapsible feature, you do not need to have a large car to transport it. Unlike the rigid wheelchairs, folding type is more flexible because it has several fold-able parts and joints.

Folding wheelchairs is significantly more stable on rough roads compared to rigid wheelchairs. This is because of its four wheels stay on the surface as the frame tries to conform to the shape of the rough surface. On the other hand, folded wheelchair is quite unstable on hard surfaces. Wheelchairs are easy to store and transport because of its movable joints and parts.

However, these movable and adjustable parts also make it prone to breakage. Because of this regular maintenance and repair are required. This implicates that the cost for keeping it in good or functional condition is significantly higher than the rigid wheelchairs. It is true that wheelchairs are quite difficult to turn and move compared to rigid type. This characteristic forces the user to exert much effort turning the wheels to move forward.

The weight also adds difficulty in controlling and propelling of the wheelchair. Using a folding wheelchair restricts you from doing several activities such as sports. If you are active or a disabled athlete, this chair is not for you. Folded wheelchairs have thick and heavy parts which prohibit you from moving fast. Since it is not easy to propel, it is not capable of giving you optimum speed and performance - things you need as an athlete.

Folding wheelchair is not suitable for active lifestyle as it is prone to breakage. Since it requires much effort to move or maneuver, folding wheelchair is not a good option for individuals with weak upper body. Very young and very old users are not advised to use folding wheelchairs. However, using folding wheelchair may require some assistance especially when you want to pass on a ramp.

Folding wheelchairs have several advantages such as convenience and portability. This type of wheelchair is easier to store and transport even if it is heavier than the rigid type. Folding wheelchair may have some restrictions but it is still very helpful to a disabled person.
