What is melasma?
Melasma is a skin condition which causes brown coloured patches on the facial skin. The condition is thought to be caused by the stimulation of melanocytes (the cells which cause skin pigmentation) by variations in female sex hormone levels. Fraxel laser helps erase excessive pigmentation by producing thousands of tiny columns deep in the skin known as microscopic treatment zones which eliminate old epidermal pigment cells. The reduction in pigment cells results in a reduction in the appearance of the brown patches of melasma.
How many fraxel laser sessions are required to treat melasma?
Although each session will have an effect on the melasma, studies show that on average an effective regime consists of four sessions of fraxel laser treatment, with each session being spaced out 2 to 4 weeks apart. Optimal improvement is usually visible in about 2 to 3 months.
Does fraxel laser treatment have any side effects?
Swelling and redness are the most common side effects of fraxel laser treatment. Swelling also occurs in some instances but it usually resolves with 48 hours. Skin redness also usually resolves within a few days. The risk of infection and scarring are low with fraxel laser treatment.
