Many people worry that they will be bald because their parents are bald. This Genetic hair loss is called androgenic alopecia. It is also referred to as male pattern baldness or even female pattern baldness. Both of these conditions have the same cause, however, men and women bald differently with this condition. In men, the balding starts as a receding hairline and then works its way back. In women, the hair just starts thinning all over the head and gets worse with time. Androgenic alopecia is caused by a combination of androgens, testosterone and genes. Even women have testosterone in their body, though most people think of this as just a male hormone. Females have lower amounts. This hormone is part of what makes us grow hair all over our bodies, which includes our heads. But having too much of an androgen hormone called DHT attacks the hair. This causes the hair strand to become weaker, thinner and even turn gray. When the hair is in this weakened state, the hair growth process does not continue, as it normally should, which can cause hair to fall out prematurely. With the hair weakened, it can even come out with vigorous rushing, which can be quite disconcerting to women brushing knots out of their hair. Despite the alarming thought of this happening on your scalp there is still hope. Scientists have isolated the gene that causes androgenic alopecia. This means that they can do a DNA test on your hair to determine if you carry the gene. This is not a conclusive test to determine if you will go bald, as there are many factors to this, but it does let you know what the risk factors are. This is beneficial because if you know you are going to develop this condition, you and your doctor can keep an eye on your hair to start treatments at the first sign of hair loss. There are also many treatments available for male and female pattern baldness. These can be in the form of a cream you put on your scalp, such as with Rogaine or Minoxodil. It can eve be in the form of a pill, such as Propecia. It is good to note that Propecia is only for men and women who are or could get pregnant should not mess with this medication as it can cause birth defects. Laser therapy has even shown to be very beneficial at the early stages of pattern baldness. This treatment subjects your scalp to certain lights that will increase the blood flow to the scalp and have been shown to make hair fuller and thicker. The trick with this procedure is to do it while the follicles are still alive. If your pattern baldness has gotten severe, you can even try hair restoration surgeries. Just because you inherited a gene that can make you go bald does not mean you have to take it lying down. There are many different thins you can do, from testing to treatments. It is all up to you and how much work you want to do to keep your full head of hair.
