Flatulence is a common problem that affects everyone at some time or other. It occurs when you need to drive out the excess air that builds up in your body. The gut from oesophagus to rectum contains a lot of gases, but mainly of nitrogen and oxygen, which is produced during eating and talking. Carbon dioxide is produced when the acid present in the stomach comes into contact with bile and juices from the pancreas. Some of these gases are absorbed into the blood and will be breathed out in due course. The rest is passed out through the rectum.

If you are generally healthy, then flatulence should not be a cause for concern. Treatment may be necessary if the flatulence become very severe or is accompanied by other symptoms such as abdominal pain, vomiting or diarrhoea, in which case you should first get advice from your GP.There are some gut relaxant drugs available, which can help to ease bloating and the symptoms associated with flatulence. Asmebeverine and Alverine are available in over-the-counter treatments or on prescription through your GP.

Take a tsp of ajowan(Ajmud) seeds and roast it in a pan until the seeds turn red. Pour 2 cups of water into the pan and boil until the water is reduced to half . Take this decoction once a day for a safe and sure remedy for gaseous distension of the abdomen.

Mix a tsp each of liquorice (‘Mulhati’ in Hindi and ‘jesthtamadhu’ in Kannada) and sugar in water and drink from time to time.

Chewing peppermint after a meal does a lot more than just freshening your breath. Peppermint contains menthol that soothes the digestive muscles. It helps in treating flatulence, bloating and abdominal pain that accompanies gas. Peppermint oil combined with caraway oil has been used since ages to treat abdominal discomfort caused by flatulence.

Most flatus is produced in the intestine by undigested carbohydrates. Instead of being broken down in the stomach, some starches enter the small intestine intact. The intestine does not produce the enzymes necessary to digest two specific carbohydrates--raffinose and stachyose--so they just sit there until the bacteria that normally inhabit the bowel ferment, a process that releases gas.

The foods causing the most flatulence, such as leguminous vegetables, cabbage, black bread, etc., must o,f course be eliminated from the diet, and when necessary milk must also be forbidden or only allowed in small quantities, Care must also be taken that its origin be irreproachable. A diet easily digested must be adhered to; it may be composed of tender meat, ham, eggs, rice, tapioca, sago, fine white bread, zwieback, etc. Potatoes are only allowed when mashed, as fried or roasted potatoes give rise to flatulency. Bread made with a sour dough should be avoided, as in this way large quantities of bacteria are introduced. Whatever might cause fermentative processes must be usually avoided. Beer especially is forbidden. Tea or even a little red wine might be used to advantage.

Activated charcoal tablets, available without a prescription at drugstores, may help to absorb some excess gas and calm your flatulence problem. If you are taking any prescription medications, however, first ask your pharmacist whether the activated charcoal will interfere with them.
