Who else wants to know if teeth whitening is dangerous? If you are anything like me, you may be vain....but you want to be safe as well, right? It's true.....with so many new and exciting ways to dramatically whiten your teeth available to many of us, it feels like the days of setting for ugly stains and discoloration are long behind us. But are these methods truly safe, or are we only trading one problem for another?
The good news is that yes, for the vast majority of us, home based whitening systems ARE safe. Are there exclusions to this rule...or folks who shouldn't be using them? Yes, there are some of those too. Let's take a look at who should avoid whitening gels before speaking to their dental professional.
- Are you pregnant of breast feeding?If you are, it's a good idea not to begin a tooth whitening regimen either. (simply wait until you are no longer breast feeding, or pregnant and worry about your teeth then..:-)
- Children should not use teeth whiteners of any kind.Why? The teeth at the formative stages are simply more sensitive to any number of potential issues, making kids (and even young teens) NOT a good candidate for teeth whitening. (plus it should be necessary for them either)
- Do you have super sensitive gums or teeth?If you do, it's probably a good idea to either test a program before you buy, or maybe even stay away from whitening completely. Some people do report a wee bit of extra sensitivity while using bleaching gels and trays, and if you are predisposed to sensitivity, you might exacerbate it unnecessarily with either in office, OR home based whitening systems.
Bonus Tip:Remember, many of the popular home based teeth whitening products are total scams! Painted or brushed on products, strips, and even special toothpastes and low grade bleaching gels may sound good.....but are really a complete waste of your time, energy and income to boot.
