Every smoker, deep down, knows that their habit can have severe consequences on their own health. The problem is that this doesn't seem to be motivation enough in itself to get people to successfully quit. It is an indication of just how strong an addictive hold nicotine can have over a person, when they can't stop lighting up another cigarette knowing full well the damage they are doing to themselves. With this in mind, here are some additional motivational factors to consider to help you kick the habit.

Don't Just Think About Yourself

It isn't just you that breathes in your smoke but those around you too. Your friends, family, work colleagues and complete strangers are all breathing in your second-hand smoke, and it will affect their health too.

Do you really want your children breathing in your smoke? Second hand smoke has been shown to cause ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) in children. Don't have kids? OK, but you may want them someday. Smoking can cause impotence in men, and women who smoke when pregnant are potentially harming their child in the womb. Smoking when pregnant can also cause your child to be more likely to suffer from asthma and allergies.

Setting Goals And Rewards

Giving yourself a reward is a great way to motivate you to do anything, including quit smoking . Think of a way to set goals for yourself, such as reducing your cigarette use from 2 packs a day to 1 inside a week. When you reach that goal you get your reward, whether it be an evening out, tickets to a game or concert or whatever you come up with.

A good way to help you get to that goal is if you get someone else, such as a partner or friend, to be the judge as to whether you deserve the reward or not. This will stop you cheating and giving yourself the reward even if you fail, and you will also be more motivated because you won't want to look like a failure to this person.

And If That's Not Enough To Motivate You...

Quit smoking won't just reduce your risk of serious problems like lung cancer and heart disease, it will increase your overall health and wellbeing. This you will notice in the first few weeks of quitting, when you are able to breathe easier without coughing and hacking up phlegm. You will have more energy, and the increased lung capacity will mean you can be more active and are able to enjoy more 'active' hobbies.

We also shouldn't forget to mention how much money you will save. The prospect of having more cash to spend on yourself and your family, or save for a holiday, should be a great motivator. And you will be more attractive too! The increased oxygen in your blood will make your skin clearer and less wrinkled whilst adding more color to your complexion.

Stop smoking will not just add years to your life, but increase the overall quality of life. You will be able to spend more quality time with your friends and family, doing things you want to do without worrying about needing a cigarette.
