Gold chains will forever be a popular piece of jewelry. It doesn't matter if they are given as a gift for that special person in your life, or worn by yourself for that matter. Whether they're worn alone or adorned with pendants and such, this versatile jewelry staple adds a class and elegance to anything you wear.
One type of gold chain in particular is a curb chain. This is a flat link chain with edges that are rounded, also known as a service chain; this is due to the fact that it has been worn by serviceman to hold their religious medals, charms etc. It's defined by it's interlocking links which make up the chain. Usually these chains are quite heavy and have a rounded appearance. The links which interlock give the chain a flowing effect throughout the design.
Curb chains have also been made popular by the hip hop community. Hip hop style gold chains can range from the big and bold to small and demure.
Gold-filled curb chains are another style with links that appear to twist around. Gold-filled chains are made by taking a base metal (commonly brass) and fusing gold (14k) to that base.
You can find gold curb chains in many types of gold alloy. You could also find them with just a coating of gold on them. There's many ways that a jeweler could apply a coat of gold onto a metal that is inexpensive, which will greatly reduce the items cost. As long as the gold coating is thick, it is unlikely to wear away and expose the metals that lie underneath. Often the gold itself is covering sterling silver (gold plate), which will make your curb chain much more durable.
Gold jewelry will never go out of style, and it continues to be a beautiful, popular to wear item. Gold never tarnishes as many other metals could stain your skin. Gold can be shaped into anything. It mostly comes in 10,14, 18 or 24 karat. If you have 18k gold, 18 karat gold is 75% gold. It's mixed with 6 parts metal which makes it 18 karat. The same goes for any other karat of gold except for 24 karat gold which is 100% pure. 10 karat gold is the minimum karat to be called "gold" in the USA.
Now that you know more about what curb chains are made of, you might think to yourself what type of gold should I look for when purchasing my own curb chain? Solid gold is the best for you if you're planning to wear the gold daily as it is quite durable. If you're allergic to any type of metal such as nickel, then you should choose something that has a higher gold content. An 18k or 22karat gold would be best for you. If you wear it everyday, the gold top layer will become worn off, and the metal below will expose itself, and this may end up staining your skin which could in turn cause you to have an allergic reaction. This is where spending a little extra money might be best in the long run. For a good investment, try to buy the best gold curb chain that your spending will allow and it will last forever.
