Hair loss can be a stressful factor for many people. Some decide to settle with the reality of going bald and knowing that this can cause you to lose your confidence and damage your self-esteem, but some of us decide to do something about it and we dedicate to invest in ourselves. Gaining confidence makes us feel good about ourselves, especially while being around others. There is still no exact explanation for why some of us suffer from this intimidating, embarrassing condition called Alopecia (hair loss), but we do know what causes it and we do know how to treat it.

There are several FDA approved treatments and procedure for Alopecia, but the most recommended and most effective treatment is Propecia (Finasteride). One pill a day, every day, could help you, not just stop the thinning process, but will also help you REGROW more hair. Propecia is the trade name for the company Merck and Finasteride is the actual, only active ingredient that actually does the miracle. It is very simple to explain the process of hair loss and how Finasteride works to stop this process.

Testosterone travels through our blood and settles on tissues like skin, scalp. Testosterone is then converted to DHT (Dihydrotestosterone) by an enzyme called 5-alpha reductase. Finasteride only blocks this enzyme, meaning that your testosterone is untouched. Many people who are afraid of taking Finasteride think that it will minimize your testosterone levels, when instead it is only blocking the enzyme from converting testosterone to DHT, which is the hormone that shrinks your hair in your scalp and causes it to become weak to the point where it vanishes away completely.

Finasteride will help to stop the miniaturization of the hair follicles and it will help to re-grow most of the small thin hairs that were affected by DHT. Finasteride is an oral medication taken once daily. Results can be shown within 6 to 12 months but it can vary. Finasteride only works in your scalp but it is more effective in the top and crown area as it does very little for the hair line even though many have reported to have descent results for the frontal recession lines.

According to Merck, Finasteride is about 90% effective and it must be taken continuously to avoid seeing any hair loss. The main side effect is a decrease in libido and this only occurs in less than 2% of men. Finasteride is approved for men only as it can cause abnormalities in the male baby's sex organs if a pregnant woman handles Finasteride since it can be absorbed through the skin. Some doctors prescribe Finasteride to some women who are experiencing hair loss and are post-menopausal.

Finasteride also has another essential benefit, besides growing hair, it helps to reduce the size of the prostate for men who suffer from BPH (Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia) or enlargement of the prostate. Be sure to consult with your doctor before taking Propecia or Finasteride. You will need a doctor's prescription for Finasteride.
