There are many reasons why a handicap vehicle may be needed. An individual may have been in an accident where he or she is temporarily unable to walk. People who have permanent limited mobility can also benefit from the use of a handicap vehicle. The process of equipping vehicles for handicapped use can be difficult if not researched properly. There are several different factors that should be considered before purchasing or outfitting a vehicle for handicap use. The research will save both time and money.

There are several different types of vans and cars that can be used as handicap vehicles. Mobility vans are the most popular option, because they provide the most amount of room. Vans are most suitable for people who have been confined to a wheelchair. Both full-sized vans and mini vans can be used for wheelchair access. An alternative to the traditional van is to use a large SUV to outfit as a handicap vehicle. For more temporarily disabled who do not need a wheelchair, such as those hurt in accidents, it is possible to purchase conversion equipment for cars so that the occupants can drive one-handed or without the use of feet.

Some of the equipment that is necessary to convert cars and vans to use for the disabled is quite interesting and very useful. There are different modifications that can be installed in any car or van to make it possible for nearly anyone to drive. There are pedals and hand controls that enable amputees to drive, as well as steering wheels that can be outfitted with brake, gas, and other controls that are otherwise operated by feet. These modifications are best for people who are still mobile enough to drive on their own.

For people confined to wheelchairs, there are seat that can be installed into any van or other higher vehicle to enable the handicapped person to be able to climb in and out of the car on their own. The seats turn, dip, and rise so that the handicapped person has much less work to do to get inside of the car. However, this is not for handicapped persons who have no mobility at all. This is a great help for handicapped persons who do not have a constant companion.

One of the greatest pieces of equipment available for the handicapped is the motorized lift. These lifts create a retractable ramp that a wheelchair can drive up inside the car. Some lifts are designed to help the occupied wheelchair into the car, while others are used to place the un-occupied wheelchair into the van. It is possible to purchase a lift that is capable of working with all unique situations. Some lifts are attached to the back of the van, while others attach to the side doors.

One of the most important decisions to make when facing the need for a handicap vehicle is how long the vehicle will be needed. If the accident is temporary, then it is a good idea to consider renting a conversion van or other handicap friendly vehicle for the time needed. However, if the handicap is permanent, then it is a better idea to purchase the vehicle. Most insurances will help pay for any equipment that is designed to help a handicapped person. Make sure to check with your insurance provider before purchasing or renting any equipment.
