Located a stone’s throw from High Street Kensington tube station, The Roof Gardens has been an exotic destination for over half a century. The dream of Trevor Bowen, the then Vice-President of Barkers and Ralph Hancock, a landscape architect, The Roof Gardens was laid out between 1936-8.
Over 500 species of plants, shrubs and trees were planted to create the horticultural splendour that visitors enjoy today. Since that time, the building has passed through several hands – with a special high point its seventies period when as roof garden of the Biba department store it was THE London destination. A spell as exclusive nightclub Regine’s followed until 1981, when Sir Richard Branson turned the Kensington Roof Gardens into the stunning urban oasis that it is today.
