Are you having a hard time understanding a conversation? Do you usually respond incorrectly and slowly to what others are saying? Are you experiencing problems and felt pain or ringing in your ears when you converse over the telephone? Do people get irritated because you misunderstand what they are telling you? Do your family members complain that you turn on the television with the volume too high? If yes, then you are experiencing basic symptoms of hearing loss.

Hearing loss is also called hearing impairment. People frequently associate this term with deafness or being deaf. This happens when a problem occurs with one or more parts of the ear. People with hearing impairments could hear some of the sounds and sometimes, they hear nothing at all. Hearing loss can happen gradually or suddenly and it can be mild, grave, short-term or even worse, permanent.

Deafness or hearing loss is the most common birth defect in babies. Newborns with damaged auditory systems may have the chance to hear with the use of artificial equipments like hearing aids. Hearing aids gives the ability to hear with great flexibility because it can amplify sound waves and could give audible comfort, making the background noise not too loud.

This disorder can also happen later in life. Some of the known causes of hearing loss are:

1.    AGE. When people age, some body organs functions more slowly. This makes changes in the inner ear that creates a slow and constant hearing loss.

2.    NOISE. Too much noise can strain the eardrums. This causes tension and imbalance in the auditory system which leads to an inconsistent respond to sounds.

3.    EXTERNAL FACTORS. There are also other factors that can cause hearing impairment. This includes infection to the ears, head or ear injury as well as a buildup of the earwax.

Aside from its causes, we must also be aware of the different types of hearing loss.

1.    CONDUCTIVE HEARING LOSS. This happens when there is damage in the outer or middle ear. External otitis or infection in the ear canal, abnormality in the ear canal or outer ear, high buildup of earwax, strained eardrums, and other ear infection are conditions that can cause a conductive hearing impairment. Although these conditions could be mild or severe, it can still be corrected surgically or medically.

2.    SENSORINEURAL HEARING LOSS. This happens when the inner ear or the nerves connecting to the inner ear was damaged. It can also be corrected surgically and medical but there will be a permanent hearing loss. This sometimes occurs as a congenital or an inborn disease. But exposure to too much noise, toxic drugs, viruses and head injury can also result to sensorineural hearing loss.

3.    MIXED HEARING LOSS. Mixed hearing loss is basically a combination of the conductive and sensorineural hearing loss. This happens when there is impairment in the outer, middle and inner ear as well as damage in the auditory nerves.

4.    UNILATERAL HEARING LOSS. This type of hearing loss can be mild or severe. One ear has a normal hearing but other one is experiencing pain and discomfort in hearing sounds. This can also occur in both children and grownups. Delayed language and speech development are some of the effects of unilateral hearing loss.
