Hot flashes are the body's response to lowered estrogen levels. Our body's thermostat is located in the hypothalamus are of the brain, which stops working properly if level of estrogen are not sufficient. About eighty percent of all women have hot flashes. During a hot flash, your face and upper body feels as if it's been shoved into an oven. Your face reddens and you sweat heavily as your skin temperature suddenly rises 7 or 8 degrees. A typical hot flash lasts about 2.7 minutes.

Well, there are prescriptions available to help women cope with all of the symptoms of menopause including hot flashes, but more women are searching for alternative medicines and treatments. One such alternative treatment is to drink eight glasses of steam-distilled water. Another is to take 800 mg. of evening primrose oil, three times a day.

In trying to combat hot flashes, it is also important to have a positive outlook in live. Moreover, try to avoid places and conditions that you know will raise your body temperature. Such examples are saunas, hot tubs, and hot baths and showers. Avoid going outside in the hottest part of the day as much as possible. If it can't be helped, then try to dress in cool fabrics, such as cotton. It might even be a good idea to dress in layers so that you can take off or add clothing depending on your body temperature and your environment.
